Wages and working hours recommendations
When you decide about the wage for the au pair, following factors should be taken into consideration:
- The recommended wage and working hours for au pairs in your country (see table). If you need your au pair to work more hours than what is recommended, make sure to pay extra.
- Household chores. Depending on the extent and difficulty of the chores, you should consider to give your au pair a higher wage.
- Amount of children and the children´s age. If you have many children, and especially if they are small, the au pair has to make a greater effort to look after them. In these occasions, it would be nice to show the au pair some appreciation by setting a proper salary.
- If you have children with special needs, this will probably require more effort from the au pair as well.
- Experience in the field. Au pairs that have prior experience from working with children will probably require a higher wage.
- Extra work during holidays. If you need your au pair to work during special holidays like Christmas or Eastern, make sure to recompense by paying extra.
The table below shows the recommended working hours and salary for different countries. Please do not base the au pair wage only on the following information. Always check additional source of information (for example other au pair ads and governmental sources) before deciding on the wage.
