Important to have in mind when becoming a host family

What are your expectations?

If possible, document your expectations in the contract. You should also have a think about house rules such as at what time you would like your au pair to be home in the evenings. Can they bring friends to your house etc?

Talk to your au pair’s family

A great way of getting to know your au pair better is by talking to her parents. Tell them about your expectations and what duties the au pair will be expected to do. Also ask about the au pair’s experiences of being away from home for longer periods of time.

Aim to solve problems straight away

Problems and conflicts may naturally occur with your au pair. Most of these issues are based on pure misunderstandings or lack of communication. Cultural differences may also cause problems. Another common reason for an unhappy au pair, is if they do not feel like a member of your family. It’s your duty to do your very best to solve these problems. The best way is to communicate and find a common solution. Don’t give up, it is better to solve your issues. The results will be a happy au pair who stays throughout the contracted period and will recommend you to other au pairs.

Good advice

Try to be a united team with clear boundaries for the children. Listen to your children’s feelings but don’t be obscured, the kids may not like the au pair because they have rules in place. It’s impossible for an au pair to have authority if parents contradict the rules you have made for your children.  Be united, show trust in your au pair and your children will be raised your way.
